Discover how taking TSL courses can broaden the art and the science of teaching languages. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ana-Marija Petrunic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the Manager of Teaching and Learning, English Language Program, Continuing Education at the University of Calgary. In addition to leading the instructional team in curriculum design, teacher professional development, and best practices, her role also includes supervising practicum students and teacher training. Her academic research focuses on the intersection of identity formation and education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11:00 am Session III (a)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Workshop 1 \u2013 &#8220;Coordinating Communication Tasks&#8221; <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presenter: <\/span><b>Constantine Ioannou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, International Languages Educators\u2019 Association (ILEA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-Host: Ingrid Smith, Director, SAHLA<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constantine will provide strategies that promote communication in the classroom and that engage students in interacting with each other to complete learning tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This session will provide numerous easy initiatives for teachers to implement into their classrooms that are aimed at increasing communication and cooperation in language classrooms. Ideas presented can be modified to various contexts, age groups and classrooms and bring a sense of purpose back to communicative lessons. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11:40 am Session III (b)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workshop 2 <\/span><b>International Languages in Ontario &#8211; Past Excellence &amp; Future Opportunity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presenter:<\/span><b> Constantine Ioannou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, International Languages Educators\u2019 Association (ILEA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constantine will provide an outline of the Ministry-mandated program of International Languages (IL) in the province of Ontario and how this mandate \u00a0of several decades ago has helped to create a society that is more cohesive, inclusive and linguistically and culturally aware. Constantine will provide an overview of recent initiatives to both IL-E and IL-S programs in the province of Ontario and how ILEA (the association) works to provide support to both teachers and school administrators in the implementation of Ministry directions in IL programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Constantine Ioannou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> works as a program director for international projects and exchanges for the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. Constantine is a former teacher, curriculum supervisor and materials writer for English and International Languages and serves as Director of ILEA (international languages educators&#8217; association) Ontario. \u00a0 He is an active teacher trainer for Canadian ESL and international language teachers and international teachers of English.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12:00 pm lunch<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12:15 keynote address: Introduction: <\/span><b>Michael Embaie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, President, SAHLA<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael was born in Eritrea (East Africa or Horn of Africa) and came to Canada as a Government of Canada sponsored refugee in 1983. \u00a0Michael has a Bachelor and a Master of Social Work Degree with specialization in Policy and International Social work from the University of Calgary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael is currently finishing the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Law program. (Michael will be able to practice as a licensed Immigration Consultant at the end of the program).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael completed a graduate course (Diploma) in International Law and Protection of Refugees at York University, Toronto, Ontario. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael worked for the federal Government of Canada, Department of Immigration and Refugee Board for 25 years as Chief of Research Documentation Centre, Prairie Region (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba); and as a Tribunal Officer and Dispute Resolution Officer for Western Canada. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael has been teaching graduate and undergraduate courses as a Sessional Instructor at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Social work and Department of Sociology for almost 16 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael also worked for the United Nations on and off \u00a0for seven years as a Resettlement Consultant and Training Expert. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Honourable David Eggen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Minister of Alberta Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks: <\/span><b>Vinay Dey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Treasurer, SAHLA<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>David Eggen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was sworn in as the Minister of Education and as the Minister of Culture and Tourism on May 24, 2015. Mr. Eggen was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Edmonton-Calder on April 23, 2012 and again on May 5, 2015. He previously represented the constituency from 2004 to 2008 and served as the ND&#8217;s critic for energy, education, environment and sustainable resource development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr. Eggen has served as a member of the following committees:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standing Committee on Families and Communities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standing Committee on Legislative Offices<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standing Committee on Alberta\u2019s Economic Future<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select Special Chief Electoral Officer Search Committee<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select Special Ethics Commissioner Search Committee<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standing Committee on the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr. Eggen was educated at the University of Alberta, where he received a bachelor of education degree in 1984. He then went to Zimbabwe, where he taught for three years.
